Legal Issues in Special Education
This course provides an overview of relevant laws as they pertain to students who are identified as having a disability. Students will review federal laws and regulations as well as influential court cases that are significant and relevant to present educational practice. The referral process will be discussed as well as detailed consideration of the ideology and merits of inclusive classrooms and the IEP development. Ethical considerations will be explored. Reasons for the high litigation in special education will be a focus as well as the rights of children with disabilities. Students will learn the importance of complying with requirements of the laws and will be able to protect the rights andinterests of all children.
