JST 5005 Torah Lishma and Torah u-Madda: Educational Philosophy and Leadership

The course aims to introduce fundamental concepts in Jewish educational philosophy and leadership, focusing on the core ideas: Torah Lishmah (study for its own sake) and Torah U-Madda (integrating Torah with secular knowledge), while also comparing and analyzing the critical shared features between Jewish and Christian educational leadership. It begins with a comprehensive review of the history of educational philosophy and subsequently delves into educational leadership grounded in exemplary frameworks relevant to the era of diversity and artificial intelligence (AI). It critically examines the essential aspects of Jewish educational philosophy and educational leadership as foundational models, while conducting a comparative analysis with Korean educational philosophy and leadership to elucidate their positive applications and implications. By exploring superior leadership models derived from these two representative educational philosophies, the course seeks to identify innovative methodologies and strategies for reshaping educational philosophy and leadership in the age of AI. Ultimately, it aims to articulate meaningful objectives and effective pathways for cultivating forward-thinking and exceptional leadership anchored in a robust educational philosophy.
