MAT 1011 Digital System Design and Communications

This course covers theoretical and practical issues in digital system design. Students undertake group projects in digital electronics, in which they design, build and test logic circuits on breadbaords in a laboratory. Topics in safety and use of equipment such as function generators and oscilloscopes are covered. As students document their projects, best practices in technical writing and communications are discussed. Methods for effective project management and working in a team are also covered. Broader issues including societal impact of technology and professional ethics are also discussed. The course also introduces topics in discrete math and linear algebra including: Boolean algebra, finite-precision arithmetic, finite-state machines, complex numbers, matrix and vector algebra.
