TAS 7523 Literature of the Geonic Period

This course is a textual examination of Geonic literature, that will focus on different Geonic authors and genres each time it is given, including (but not limited to) Rav Saadia Gaon, Rav Samuel ben Hofni Gaon, Rav Hayya Gaon, responsa, She'iltot, introductions to the Talmud, and the reception of Geonic literature in North Africa and Spain. The course will treat Geonic monographs not only as works of halakhah, but also as windows into the intellectual, social, and economic world of the Jews of Babylonia and the broader Islamic Near East.
