Overview

The Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences is a rigorous and research-focused program that provides comprehensive training in both classical mathematical disciplines and interdisciplinary applications. Students have the opportunity to specialize in either pure and applied mathematics or computational science. The program adopts an apprenticeship-style approach, where students engage in long-term research projects under the close mentorship of experienced faculty members. With a selectively sized Ph.D. program, we ensure every student receives personalized support.

Requirements (66 credits)

The program is structured into three tracks based on prior graduate coursework, ranging from three to five years in duration. Students in each track must complete the coursework indicated, pass a qualifying exam, and produce a doctoral dissertation based on original research.

Track Requirements

Track I: Three years of study for students who enter with 60 credits of graduate coursework.
Pass a qualifying exam, complete  MAT 8970 Thesis Research repeated for 6 credits, and produce a doctoral dissertation.

Track II: Four years of study for students who enter with 30 credits of graduate coursework.
Complete 30 credits of coursework including 4 core courses, pass a qualifying exam, MAT 8970 Thesis Research repeated for 6 credits, and produce a doctoral dissertation.

Track III: Five years of study for students who enter with no previous graduate coursework.
Complete 60 credits of coursework including 4 core courses, pass a qualifying exam, MAT 8970 Thesis Research repeated for 6 credits, and produce a doctoral dissertation.
