SWK 8007 Topics

This course will introduce students to social work and public health in the contexts of global inequalities, human rights, and pandemics and public health emergencies. Students will examine cross-cutting values and ethical frameworks in social work and public health theory, policy and practice, including social and health justice, adequacy, equity, inclusion, and diversity. The pre-existing inequities and precarities that were demonstrably heightened because of the COVID-19 pandemic will be analyzed as an example, with a focus on the disproportionate impact upon people of color and populations experiencing vulnerability, including older people and nursing home residents. Students will build skills in evaluating practical problems confronting policymakers, such as choices concerning care systems for older adults and persons with disabilities and designing solutions to complex workforce problems threatening access to healthcare in emergencies and pandemics. Prerequisite(s): SWK 8421, SWK 8406, SWK 8425, SWK 8809, SWK 8814, SWK 8422, SWK 8823 and SWK 8296.
