SWK 8425 The History and Philosophy of Social Work

This course explores selected events in the history of social work and social welfare in the United States. Each chosen topic is traced from the colonial period to the present to demonstrate how we arrived at our current laws and policies. Examples include immigrations, health care, and racial and ethnic exclusionary policies. Special attention is given to vulnerable groups many of which thrived in spite of having limited resources. The history and development of the social work profession is viewed as central to the attainment of legal equality and social justice for many underserved Americans.
