SWK 8039 Social Work and Public Health in the Global World: Theory, Practice and Policy in Pandemic Contexts

This course will introduce PhD students to social work and public health in the contexts of the global world and global inequalities, policy and law, human rights, and pandemics and public health emergencies, with a particular focus on gerontological health and social work and access to health care, including palliative care. Students will explore and examine cross-cutting values, ethics, and human rights frameworks in social work and public health theory, policy, and policy practice, including social and health justice, the palliative ethic of care, and adequacy, equity, inclusion, and diversity. The global pandemic experience that demonstrably heightened pre-existing inequities and structural vulnerability among older people, including structural violence against older women, will be studied and analyzed. Students will also examine cross-cutting elements of social work and public health policy and practice, as well as shared theoretical and philosophical traditions, and will build skills in evaluating practical problems confronting lawmakers and policymakers such as choices concerning care systems for older adults and adequate funding for existing policy as well as policy reforms.
