SWK 8904 Proposal Seminar I

This course aims to build knowledge and skills related to the dissertation proposal, focusing on developing and justifying a plan of study rooted in empirical evidence and theory. Students will learn how to create a justification for their research topic, including understanding the context of the problem, creating a literature review that grounds their topic within the existing empirical literature, and developing a theoretical framework. This course equips students with a set of ground rules, assumptions, and techniques for understanding scholarly work in a range of professional disciplines that comprise the social sciences, with an emphasis on social work literature, the connection between social problems and social work research, and an understanding of the ways theory is used as a foundation for social work research. Restriction(s): For PhD students who have completed all or most of their coursework; and requires prior approval by the instructor or PhD Program Director.
