Under special circumstances, students may undertake academic work in a specific area not covered in the formal course offerings, subject to the availability and approval of a faculty sponsor and approval of the dean.
Independent Study for credit may be done under the following conditions:
A student must have Junior or Senior standing. Exceptions to this policy may be made at the discretion of the faculty sponsor and the dean.
Minimum average of 3.300.
The work may count toward the major with permission.
The student must work under the supervision of a faculty sponsor. (For work done outside the university, an immediate supervisor, in addition to the faculty sponsor, may be required.)
An independent study may be done during the summer with permission of the sponsor and the appropriate dean. A fee is charged.
No more than one independent study project may be undertaken per semester.
No more than three independent study projects can be taken during an undergraduate career except under special circumstances at the discretion of the faculty sponsor and the dean.
Independent study projects done during the school year may be taken for 1 or 2 credits, with few exceptions.
A student must submit an Application for Independent Study Form and seek approval from the faculty sponsor.
