Pass/No Credit (P/N)

To encourage students to pursue their interests in courses they might not otherwise take, students may select courses to be graded Pass or No Credit (P/N) under the following conditions:

Only one course each semester may be selected and must be filed during the period specified in the Academic Calendar.

An application to Take a Course on the P/N System Application (Beren Campus or Wilf Campus) must be filed during the period specified in the Academic Calendar.

Beren Campus*

Stern College for Women: General Studies

P grades cannot fulfill General Education (Gen Ed) requirements in Modes of Expression; Foundations and Contemporary Perspectives of History, Philosophy & Social Sciences; Interpreting Literature and the Arts; Science and Technology; or Quantitative Skills.

P grades cannot count for courses toward the major and/or minor.

All other courses, including those taken to fulfill Electives, may be taken as P/N.

Sy Syms School of Business (Women): General Studies - students may P/N a course in any area as long as requirements for that area have been fulfilled.

Jewish Studies: Stern College for Women & Sy Syms School of Business

Students may take up to 2 Jewish Studies courses as P/N. Courses required for the distribution, including Hebrew, may not be taken as P/N.

*Please note that Honors courses may not be taken as P/N.

Wilf Campus

A YC or Syms course may only be taken P/N if the student is above the freshman year and in good academic standing.

Only courses that are free electives may be taken as P grades. P grades may not be applied toward General Education requirements, Jewish Studies requirements, major/minor requirements, or for courses listed in the catalog as a correlate required for the major. In the case of pre-health science majors, no Biology or Chemistry electives may be taken P/N.

Students will receive either a grade of P (pass) or N (no credit) for coursework completed under this option. These grades have no impact on the student’s overall grade point average.

A P grade earns credit; an N grade does not. These grades cannot be changed at a later date.

Students do not need to inform the faculty that they are taking courses on the P/N system.

Grades of A or A- will be recorded

Grades of B+, B, B-, C+, C will be recorded as a P grade unless the student has specified otherwise

Grades of C-, D+, D, D- will be recorded as an N unless the student has specified otherwise

An F will be recorded as an N.
